September Routines

No matter how much preparation work I do over the summer holidays, the first two weeks of September always feel insanely busy and stressful. But I do love the excitement of a new school year, and the opportunity to relaunch and reset everything. Fresh starts all round.

In this post I thought it might be useful to share some of the start-of-year routines and initiatives that we have in place in my department - feel free to borrow anything that you find useful.

1. Classroom Routines
It's important to set behaviour expectations at the start of the year with every class, not just with new Year 7s. Everyone in my team goes through their own classroom routines and rules in their first lessons. Sometimes routines might take a bit of practice - for example, to ensure books are always handed in and out with maximum efficiency. 

Starting this year, the slide below is displayed in every classroom while students pack up. This will be done all year round, so it becomes a standard part of every maths lesson. I spotted a similar slide in my daughter's RS lessons (thank you @MrC_Educate!) and adapted it for maths. After a while the words can be removed, and eventually everything will be so embedded that students won't even have to look at the slide, they will just know the expectations. For now, I'm finding it really helpful - it reminds me to check their uniform before they leave my room. I'm also getting more thank yous than I used to!



2. Corridor Etiquette
The layout of our maths department (a relatively narrow corridor with classrooms on both sides) means that we have to keep on top of things in the corridor to ensure it flows well in lesson changeovers. This year I have introduced the poster below. I decided to wait a couple of weeks to launch this because students already experience information overload at the start of the year. Next week we will talk through it in our maths lessons, and following that we will put these posters up in the corridor and by our classroom doors. Obviously the posters alone won't make a difference - staff will need to work together to help ensure that students do the right thing - but I think written reminders of what we want to achieve is helpful for everyone.


3. Launching Homework Platforms
This seems like an obvious thing to say, but I know that many schools don't do it: I think it's vital to relaunch your homework platform every year. We use Sparx, but the same goes for all online platforms, in all subjects: it's not going to be used well if you don't tell students how to use it.

For Year 7 we do a full lesson launching Sparx. We enthusiastically talk them through how it works and why it matters, we show them videos, and we do a live demo (because the whole department launches Sparx with all classes on the same day, it's not possible for us to take them to computer rooms). For Year 8 - 11, we remind them of how to log in, remind them how to get the best out of the platform, and tell them what has changed from last year. Sparx has made some excellent updates over summer which we were excited to share with students last week, plus we have switched on parent emails for the first time.

4. Student Support
I've blogged before about the student support we offer so I won't go into detail here, but I will describe how we launch our offer. Everything starts next week - we are hopeful for a similar turnout to last year, when we regularly had over one hundred Year 11s at Papers Society.
  • Posters are put up in the maths corridor and classrooms
  • Maths teachers are given slides to show in lessons in the week leading up to the launch
  • The same slides are put into tutor time notices, and shown on the display screens around school
  • Parents are informed in a letter home (see below)
  • I tell Year 11 parents in person during my presentation at Raising Achievement Evening
  • Throughout the year, teachers routinely remind students of what's on offer and encourage attendance 


5. Communication
Last week I wrote to all parents in Key Stage 3 and 4 (I do this every year), and for the first time I also wrote to Year 12 parents. Admittedly these letters are rather long so I know that some parents won't read them, but I do always get some parents thanking me for providing the information upfront so I think they are worth sending. The letters cover all the frequently asked questions - e.g. on UKMT challenges, setting, equipment, homework and so on, which will (hopefully) reduce workload for my team throughout the year because teachers won't get individual emails from parents asking about these things.

5 Maths Gems #56

This is my 56th update from the world of Maths EduTwitter. If you're not a tweeter, or if you're wondering whether you've missed anything, here's a summary of some of the latest ideas and resources for teaching maths.

1. Euro 2016 Maths
@dooranran makes lovely maths resources. I think teachers will really like the activities he has prepared for Euro 2016. Topics include vectors, Pythagoras, trigonometry, angles on parallel lines, time, pie charts and estimating the mean.

2. Pythagoreanmath.com
I discovered a fabulous website, pythagoreanmath.com, which has lots of cool content including an amazing section on Euclid's Elements. Do check it out. I also really like their 'Complete Explanation for Area of a Circle Formula'.
3. Find someone who can
@rondelle10_b shared an interesting idea which Phil Bruce (@pbrucemaths) adapted for maths. In 'Find Someone Who Can', students ask other members of the class to answer questions using the sheet pictured below. This develops students' mathematical communication skills as they are required to explain solutions to classmates. You can download the PDF from Phil's page of revision resources.
4. Colin Foster's Activities
I discovered Colin Foster's 'Instant Maths Ideas' books a while ago. I enjoy browsing through them every now and then - they're packed full of excellent tasks and questions.

For example, in Possible or Impossible? students are asked to decide whether each statement in the table below is possible or impossible. If it’s possible they are asked to give an example and if it's impossible they have to say why.
Another great activity, this time from Colin's chapter on rounding, is this task which looks at various scenarios in which students have to calculate 17 ÷ 5. In each case they have to think carefully about how to round their answer.
5. More from MathsPad
Another awesome free resource from MathsPad: Using a Calculator - Odd One Out. This activity addresses lots of common errors and misconceptions.

Posters vs Posters

Tom Bennett recently wrote an article in the TES in which he suggested that some tasks - like making posters - aren't always the most effective use of lesson time. Some people didn't read the article properly, interpreted the headline as a personal attack on their teaching, and a Twitterstorm ensued.

When asked my opinion on poster lessons I said that they aren't my cup of tea, but I was picturing a specific type of lesson. There are posters, and then there are posters...

My Bad Poster Experience
In my NQT year I had to teach Year 7 about the Fibonacci sequence. There are many approaches I could have taken here: a lecture, a rich task, an investigation, a video... Open Evening was approaching and I'd been told to put some student work on my classroom wall, so I decided to take my students to an IT Room to make Fibonacci posters. Here's the brief I gave them (written by my NQT self):
The Fibonacci sequence is a famous sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 35, ... Your task is to create a poster about the Fibonacci sequence. You may submit this poster at the end of the lesson, or if you want to finish it for homework you may hand it in on Monday.
Your poster should be eye-catching and easy to read and contain interesting facts about the Fibonacci sequence. You should focus on one or more the following ideas:
1. Who was Fibonacci?
2. Fibonacci’s rabbits/family trees
3. The Golden Number/Golden Ratio/Golden Section
4. Fibonacci spirals
5. Fibonacci rectangles/geometry/architecture/Islamic art
6. Fibonacci in nature (flowers, plants, pine cones etc)
7. Fibonacci poetry
Important: Do not just cut and paste stuff from the internet without reading and fully understanding it. Try to put things in your own words. You must understand everything you put on your poster and be ready to answer questions about it.
I also provided a list of useful links to steer them in the direction of decent websites.

Some students made their poster on the computer - they cut and paste some standard information about Fibonacci into Word and spent most of the lesson playing around with fonts. I suspect that if I'd quizzed these students afterwards on what their poster actually said, they'd be clueless. Zero learning there then.

Some students did the research online and made their poster by hand. These were lovely, but far more time had been spent on bubble writing than actually learning about Fibonacci.

I took a quick look at the posters, realised that it hadn't been a particularly effective lesson, praised my students for their efforts and put all of the posters on my classroom wall.

I was mortified on Open Evening when a visiting dad called me over to the display to point out all the mistakes. "Look," he said, "this text doesn't make any sense" and "Four of these posters haven't even got the right numbers in the Fibonacci sequence". He was right. The posters looked pretty but the content was terrible. I wasn't sure what to say. I hadn't expected anyone to actually read the posters! This man, understandably, had higher expectations of a top grammar school. There it was on my wall, for everyone to see - evidence that my students knew very little about Fibonacci.

That was the last time I did that kind of poster lesson. I'm sure there'll be lots of people who'll tell me that they've had much more success with similar tasks. That's great, I'm not telling anyone not to do this, I'm just telling you about my personal experience. After my 'create a Fibonacci poster' lesson most students knew very little - if anything - about Fibonacci.

My Good Poster Experience
The resources of the Standards Unit and Mathematics Assessment Project are widely regarded to be outstanding. Many of these resources involve making 'collaborative posters'. The aim of these activities is for students to work in pairs (or small groups - but I'd always go for pairs) to develop their understanding of a concept. These are nothing like the kind of posters I described above. These activities are about students actually doing maths, and the 'posters' are just a place to organise their thinking.

I used the Sorting Equations of Circles 1 lesson from Mathematics Assessment Project with my Year 12s just before Easter and it worked very well. After I'd taught them the general form of the equation of a circle, I asked them to work in pairs to allocate equations to the categories on the grid (which was printed on A3 paper). The solutions are shown below.
I don't often do pair work at A level but in this lesson I heard excellent discussions in which students were really developing their understanding of the topic. Afterwards I collected the posters in, photocopied them onto A4 paper and handed a reduced copy to each student to put in their folder.

Another example is this brilliant activity Identifying Similar Triangles, again from MAP. This was done by my Year 10s at my previous school. They had to sort eight pairs of triangles into 'similar', 'not similar' or 'can't tell', drawing on their knowledge of angle facts. They worked in pairs - it's quite challenging so it took most of the lesson.
If you've not tried the activities from the Standards Unit and Mathematics Assessment Project, they're definitely worth a go, whatever your 'style' of teaching.

I'm pretty sure that when Tom Bennett wrote his now infamous poster piece, he was thinking about the former type of poster lesson - the one where no-one learnt anything - and not the latter.
