Know Your Workings

I have been fortunate that in the last ten years I haven't worked in a school that requires me to mark classwork. I always get students to mark their own answers in lessons, and I give them time to ask me for help if they find they have incorrect answers. I don't believe it is necessary for teachers to mark the practice that students do in class every lesson - and I can't imagine the horrific workload involved in such a thing. For years my students have received feedback in five main ways:

1. Verbal feedback during lessons, where I look over their shoulder and comment on their work - correcting misconceptions, suggesting alternative approaches, advising on layout etc. I'm not great at using mini-whiteboards, but that's a brilliant way to give feedback and is done very effectively by my colleagues.

2. Feedback through Hegarty Maths - instant marking of homework is very helpful for students and a huge time-saver for me.

3. Feedback from regular low stakes quizzes - I mark these myself, but it only takes about 10 minutes to mark a whole class set and gives me a good idea of common misconceptions, so I see this as time well spent.

4. Feedback from 'formal' assessments. When I taught Year 11 this was two sets of mock exams a year - at 240 marks per student per set, this was a large chunk of marking and feedback. For big classes it was a gargantuan workload.

5. Feedback from written homeworks. This is something I do very little of at Key Stage 3 and 4, but did a lot of when I taught A level. By giving big questions to complete on lined paper at the end of a topic, it gave me the opportunity to give feedback not just on students' understanding of the maths, but also on how they lay out their answers. In long A level questions it's important to be able to follow workings in order to spot where they've gone wrong. This is something that most Year 12s need to be trained in because they probably haven't answered many long questions before. This can be done by sharing examples of good work under a visualiser (I wrote about this here).

In my new school we only have Year 7 and 8 and we do two big MAT-wide assessments per year. I find marking these very informative. However, the nature of Key Stage 3 maths assessments means that the questions are typically one or two marks, and an allocated space is provided for workings. What this means is - if I never mark classwork and all homework is done on Hegarty Maths - I never really get an idea how my students set their work out, and I never get the chance to start preparing them for setting out those big A level questions that they will meet in the future.

Just before half-term I decided to take ten minutes of my Year 7 lesson to have my students complete a task on lined paper. I told them that I would mark these in detail and provide feedback. We'd just finished a unit on percentages and I took the questions from an OCR topic check-in. It was intentionally a relatively short and straightforward assessment, and I emphasised the importance of showing clear workings.


Marking these has been very revealing. I'm a bit embarrassed that it has taken me until halfway through the school year to become aware that some of my students don't really know how to set their workings out. Next year I will do a 'blank page assessment' in the first half term so I can address these things much earlier.

I have categorised the workings I saw when I marked these tests into three main types of student: the separators, the minimum possibles, and the one-liners. I have known all three types of student in the past so I guess they must be fairly common. I wonder whether you recognise them too.

1. The Separator
This student has done all of her workings down the side of the page and has written her answers seperately. Note that the workings aren't numbered, though I am able to work out which set of workings goes with each question.
Here's another one where the answers are separate from the questions, but this one is worse because the workings are in a big unnumbered jumble at the bottom of the page. This reminds me of one of those GCSE questions that are impossible to mark because there are numbers and random calculations dotted all over the page (there's an example of a question like this in AQA's recent publication).
Here's another one like that. It took me by surprise to see this separation of workings so many times.
Here's an even more extreme example. I thought this boy had done no workings at all...
... but then I found them on the back. I never told him to do this, promise!

2.  The Minimum Possible
This student has done the minimum possible amount of workings. He finished the test in about three minutes and loudly put his pencil down and turned his paper over so that everyone knew it. This student prizes speed over all else. If it wasn't for the fact I told him he had to write some workings, he wouldn't have written any at all. He doesn't (yet) see the value in them.

3. The One Liner
I know we're trying to save trees, but there's no need to limit every question to a single line. The maths here is mostly good but I will encourage this student to use a new line for each step of working. I once saw a Year 12 try to answer a six mark quadratics questions in one line. It wasn't pretty.

Thankfully this is all easily fixed. For a start I can show them some good examples using my visualiser. There are some good examples below, and each has a positive feature that I want to highlight to the class. These aren't perfect, but for the most part the workings in these examples are clear and well laid out. The maths isn't all correct, but it's easy for me to follow their thinking, which means I can give them helpful feedback and I can understand misconceptions better.




The last one here made me happy because I am constantly nagging this boy about how messy his classwork is - in fact he's probably the only student I regularly talk to about workings - and this piece of work shows a huge improvement. He has even underlined his answers like I do. It's nice when you realise that someone has been paying attention...

I know my readers probably do this kind of activity all the time, but if you haven't looked at your students' written work in a while, why not ask them to answer some questions on paper like I've done here. It was a very short test so it wasn't a huge workload for me. And given how surprised I was by what I saw, I think it was worthwhile...

5 Maths Gems #97

Welcome to my 97th gems post. This is where I share some of the latest news, ideas and resources for maths teachers.

1. Loci Match Up

Miss Konstantine (@GiftedBA) has shared a new loci activity. The square has side length 18cm, E is the midpoint of the square and the radius of the circle is 5cm. Students need to work out what colours match each statement, and find the area of each of the coloured sections. Alternatively you can give them the diagram and ask them and write their own statements.
I do love a loci activity that doesn't involve pairs of compasses...

It's worth following @GiftedBA on Twitter because she often shares ideas, resources and examples of student work. Check out her most recent post 'Squares/Roots using Area', and her post 'Circumference and Area of a Circle' in which she suggests an activity where students identify errors from a list. 
Inspired by this, Sarah Evans (@maths_missevans) has been trying out 'Find and Fix with Feedback' tasks. Having a list of feedback statements to choose from helps students to identify and understand mistakes and misconceptions.
2. Calculator Posters
Casio (@CasioMaths) has shared a set of high resolution posters of the Classwiz calculator for A level classrooms.
3. Pythagoras
James and Nicola from MathsPad have shared another lovely set of resources. I love their new worksheet and interactive tool for 3D Pythagoras.
MathsPad's October update was packed full of new resources for trigonometry and Pythagoras. One example is the set of Pythagoras puzzles where students are given one side and a set of possible answers for the other two. As James says, this might nudge thinking towards the theorem's converse.

4. Equipment Check
A level teacher Stuart Price @sxpmaths shared some things he's trying this year when marking assessments. His tests now include an equipment check for four marks - this a fun way of getting students to bring the right equipment to lessons!
Stuart uses a 'mistake' stamp when he is sure his A level students can self-correct and a 'misconception' stamp when something is fundamentally wrong.
5. Algebraic Area
Thanks to Catriona Shearer (@Cshearer41) for sharing a great set of resources on TES that she created as part of the Mathematical Reasoning at GCSE project run by Cambridge Maths Hub. I've recently discovered that lots of excellent resources are made by Maths Hub workgroups that don't end up being widely shared and I'm determined to change that!

Catriona's Algebraic Area Reasoning Tasks are based on a WJEC GCSE question about forming and solving a quadratic equation for the area of two rectangles. The tasks vary in difficulty.
For a similar set of area tasks with a more numerical approach see Catriona's Compound Area Reasoning Tasks. Also check out her set of Probability Reasoning Tasks (based on the infamous Hannah's Sweets question).

It's great that Catriona is involved in developing resources for Maths Hubs given the quality of her puzzles, which I wrote about in Gems 94. You can now download three pages of Catriona's beautiful puzzles here.
Update
I was excited to have an article about indices published in Teach Secondary magazine. It includes ten ingredients to teach indices in depth, but those ten ingredients could apply to any topic so do have a read. The full article is online here. You can also download a free resource containing four activities which you might find useful when teaching index notation.
Also look out for my article in next month's Teach Secondary magazine about algebraic order of operations.

On Friday I met up with Megan Guinan after school and we went along to the launch of Chalkdust Magazine Issue 8 at my old university UCL. We had a great time and really enjoyed the quiz. Chalkdust magazine is brilliant - you can read Issue 8 online, and if you're coming to my LateMaths event on Saturday then you'll be able to pick up a copy.
All 100 tickets have been sold for LateMaths and I've been busy making all the final arrangements over the last few days. I can't wait!

In this workgroup we'll look closely at the teaching of ratio and hopefully develop and trial some new resources for this topic. 5 Maths Gems #90

Welcome to my 90th gems post. This is where I share some of the latest news, ideas and resources for maths teachers.

1. Probability Task
Thanks to John Rowe (@MrJohnRowe) for sharing this challenging probability puzzle. If you like this then you'll find similar tasks for a wide range of topics on the fantastic website openmiddle.com which I've blogged about before.

2. Exam Wrapper
Thanks to Alice Leung (@aliceleung) for sharing an exam wrapper for students to complete after an assessment. I like it that students are asked to reflect on whether they did sufficient preparation for the exam.
 3. Number Properties Puzzle
Here's a great number puzzle from @OCR_Maths.
4. A Level
If your Year 12s have internal exams coming up, you might find my revision quizzes for pure and statistics helpful. I've told my students to print off a load of these and test themselves at home until they get everything right. The statistics quiz has a huge number of definitions! 
There was a helpful discussion about A level taster lessons on Twitter this week, initiated by Adam Creen (@adamcreen). You can read the full thread here. I have found in the past that Pascal and Binomial works well. I've also used Susan Wall's lovely 'Find the coordinates' task successfully as a starter activity in A level taster lessons.
5. Euclid
Thanks to @MrsMathematica for sharing this video about Euclid - I enjoyed watching this.

In case you missed it, I recently wrote a subject knowledge post about algebraic highest common factor and lowest common multiple. Writing this made me rethink my approach to teaching this topic. 

I also published three sets of breakfast warm up resources for both Higher and Foundation GCSE. It's been lovely to see so many schools using these to calm nerves and warm up brains on the morning of exams.

5 Maths Gems #48

Hello and welcome to my 48th gems post. This is where I share teaching ideas and resources I've seen on Twitter.

1. UKMT in the Classroom
A few people have asked how they can incorporate UKMT maths challenge questions in their teaching. I've seen three resources that might be helpful here:
  • Thanks to Lisa Chalmers ‏(@MsChalmersMaths) for telling me about this resource from Dan Walker on TES. He has taken problems from Junior and Intermediate Maths Challenges and organised them by topic in a PowerPoint, with solutions.
  • I've written before about the excellent website DrFrostMaths.com. The resources here are designed for high attainers and many of the worksheets draw questions from maths challenges and olympiads.
  • I mentioned in Gems 4 that Mathster has an online UKMT Maths Challenge Quiz

2. 'Grade 9' Paper
Thanks to Steve of m4ths.com for pulling together a set of questions that are aimed at the strongest mathematicians sitting the new GCSE. There's some lovely questions here.
3. Teaching Ideas
I spotted two nice teaching ideas on Twitter. The first idea is from Clare Hill (@chilledmaths). For teaching or revising calculus, she suggests the following:
Students take a piece of paper with expression written at the top. The first person integrates the expression, folds over the top and passes it to the next student, who differentiates the expression that they see. They then fold over the top and pass it to the next student who integrates the expression, and so on... At the end the paper is unfolded and, if all went well, the expression at the top should match the expression at the bottom.
The second idea - shown in the tweet below - was shared by Liz Gibbs (@Liz_Gibbs). This would work at both primary and secondary level for exploring plans, elevations and nets.


4. Fact of the Day
I was emailed by Ann Rush (@MissARush) with a GCSE revision idea that they've used at their school for several years.
Their 'Maths Fact of the Day' can be used in a number of ways in the run-up to GCSE exams:
  • Print the fact of the day give to each student
  • Laminate large versions and display in classrooms
  • Display the fact of the day in a prominent area in the maths corridor
  • Refer to the fact and previous facts in lesson starters/plenaries
  • Ask form tutors to share at form time.
My school does a 'Word of the Week' that is displayed all over the school - this might work for 'Maths Fact of the Day' too.

5. Feedback Sheets
Grant's (@AccessMaths) new idea has been really popular. If you're not on Twitter then you might have missed this. He has designed excellent 9 - 1 Feedback Sheets for a large number of topics. The collection continues to grow. Grant completes a feedback sheet for each student after they've done an assessment. They then respond to his feedback and, with access to a help sheet, complete the questions provided. Read Grant's recent blog posts for all the details.

5 Maths Gems #42

Hello and welcome to my 42nd gems post. This is where I share some of the best teaching ideas I've seen on Twitter.

1. Resources
To start, a few new resources that you might not have seen.

Miss Norledge (@MissNorledge) drew inspiration from a Maths Feast problem to make three coordinate geometry problems of her own. These lovely 'Triangle Regions' tasks are suitable for GCSE students or Year 12s.

The clever folks at MathsPad continue to produce excellent resources - this Always/Sometimes/Never True activity for Fractional Indices is excellent. The solutions provide very helpful explanations too. I've added this to my resource library.
Here's another great new resource from MathsPad - How many ways can we write 1 million? These are excellent activities for consolidating knowledge of indices and standard form.

2. Enrichment for Sixth Form Mathematicians
Thanks to Graham Colman (@colmanweb) for sharing his list of Maths Beyond the Curriculum activities. This list is written for Year 12/13 - it would be particularly useful for a student who intends to study maths at university. It could easily be adapted for other year groups too. Here's an extract:
3. m4ths.com
Steve from m4ths.com teaches at Thomas Clarkson Academy in Wisbech. He has been sharing some brilliant new resources recently. Here's a few examples.

His 'Find me a home' activity works well as a starter or homework. There are more of these to come.
His 18 GCSE Maths Misconceptions worksheet gets students thinking about common mathematical misconceptions.

He also has a number of topic worksheets that are very teacher-friendly. They print efficiently (multiple sheets per page) and contain a good range of practice questions. For example he has a worksheet on reverse percentages and a worksheet on algebraic fractions.

I also like this '10 Quick Thinking Questions' (extract below) on primes, squares, factors and multiples.
If you teach A level then you'll be pleased to hear that Steve has an A level page too.

4. Target Stickers
Target grades are an obsession in many schools. I'm not a fan. I tell my students to aim for top grades regardless of what their target says. After all, targets are largely based on sweeping generalisations and dodgy data.

Most teachers (myself included) are regularly required to report on progress against targets. I like the sticker idea below from Charmayne Bailey (@MissBaileyMaths). The scale makes it really clear to students where they stand, what their minimum target grade is, and where they're heading.
5. GCSE Revision Ideas
I love this idea from Mel (@Just_Maths). In her post 'Keeping Time...' she shares a sheet (shown below) for printing on A3. In a GCSE revision lesson students are given 12 questions (each worth 4 - 6 marks) to complete on the sheet, one question per section. This is a great way of practising working under timed conditions ahead of the exam. It also helps keep students focused throughout the lesson.

Another great resource for a GCSE revision lesson is this activity from @DJUdall. He uses it at the start of a GCSE revision session - students are asked to put the values in order.
